The
Lodge

Your home in the mountains

Buried deep in the snow zone at 1,640 metres, the Top Hut is that rarest of accommodation options in New Zealand: a lodge that combines alpine comfort and ski-in ski-out convenience. The Bottom Hut is located at the base of the Mt Olympus valley at 1,050 metres and offers rustic, affordable, self-catered accommodation.

Everybody is welcome

Day trippers can use the facilities at either the Top Hut or Bottom Hut. The Top Hut is always fully catered when staying the night; day-tripping brown baggers can eat their lunch inside but can’t use the kitchen to cook. For the Bottom Hut you will need to bring (and cook) all your food whether staying for the day — or the week.

Top Hut

Ski-in-ski-out serendipity

The Top Hut is the most coherent (at least before dinner) on-mountain accommodation in New Zealand. Everything, and everyone, you really need are right here. Mix with locals and global citizens, farmers and professional freeriders, the rosy of cheek and young-hearted coffin dodgers with one ski already in the grave. You’ll pitch in and help the staff with chores while soaking up the atmosphere that’s world famous in the upper reaches of the Ryton Valley.

The Top Hut is perfect for adventurous families. It takes a village — and your kids will always respond better when someone else tells them to do the dishes… Children come alive to the possibilities and responsibilities of staying at Mt Olympus; the freedom to ski with others their age, and some understanding of how the world actually works (i.e. you need to shovel the deck before you can go skiing).

The Mt Olympus difference

The Top Hut is the neat confluence of any serious skier’s needs and wants — the most luxurious bunk rooms in the country plus an espresso machine, fully-stocked bar, drying room and cedar hot tub. That’s the Mt Olympus difference – combining lowland simplicity and high society, comfort food and barista coffee, shovelling snow and smashing freshies.

Top Hut facilities

The Top Hut accommodates up to 52 overnight guests in six dedicated bunkrooms, with all the necessary amenities — ski storage, a walk-in drying room, and the flashest shower and bathroom facilities you’ll find above 1,600m. A fully serviced Operations and First Aid room with trained patrollers is available in case of any mishaps.

Kick back by the log fire after a hard day’s skiing or take a soak in the infamous hot tub. Enjoy a hearty homemade meal before propping up The Far Canal Bar and having a great time with friends. Remember, our bar is fully licensed and well stocked, so BYO is strictly prohibited.

Staying at the Top Hut

Stay for a single night, a weekend or on a weekly basis during the ski season. Overnight guests are expected to assist the staff with a range of duties; including food preparation, washing dishes, and cleaning. A roster system ensures fair allocation of tasks and limits the freeloading tendencies of the work shy.

Accommodation rates include dinner, bed, breakfast, and lunch the following day. Pre-purchase your lift passes to beat the queue. Bring a sleeping bag, pillowcase, towel, personal toiletries, and a change of clothes.

Bottom Hut

A remote mountain sanctuary

The Bottom Hut is located deep in the Ryton valley, at the foot of the Mt Olympus access road. Travelling over classic Kiwi gravel farm roads, you will follow the beautiful Ryton River and arrive in the heart of the Canterbury mountains — surrounded by (hopefully) snowy peaks at the doorstep of Mt Olympus.

Bottom Hut facilities

The Bottom Hut is a Kiwi-style alpine hut accommodation with bunk beds, shower, log burner, and self-catered kitchen. It's an excellent alternative when the Top Hut is full or inaccessible. Please bring your own food (or go hungry — there are no options to buy provisions) plus a sleeping bag and other essentials. There is plenty of parking if you’re not keen on driving up the access road in your own vehicle. Hitch-hiking is encouraged (incoming guests and members will give you a lift). There is no lift access from the Bottom Hut.

Bottom Hut to Top Hut

For those keen to venture further up the road to the top car park, a radio is located inside the Bottom Hut and should be used by all uphill traffic to check the access road status with staff in the Top Hut. Just hold the button and clearly say “Bottom Hut to Top Hut” where you will be greeted by a friendly staff / club member — just let them know your intentions and come on up to enjoy what Mt Olympus has to offer.

Ski Weeks

The quintessential Mt Olympus experience

Get locked in the Top Hut for six days of family fun, frivolity and freeride abandon. Only an extended alpine experience gives you the time to unplug, unwind, and ski yourself into shape.

The fine print

Absolutely no BYO (Bring Your Own) alcohol allowed. Mt Olympus operates a Club Licence under the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act 2012 — this legislation precludes BYO alcohol on the premises. Mt Olympus reserves the right to confiscate any contraband found on the hill.

Absolutely NO DOGS allowed. By agreement with the private landowner of the high-country station that encompasses Mt Olympus, dogs are prohibited anywhere on the station. This means no dogs in the carpark or on the field — no exceptions.
